The Story Behind Vela & Rho
Hi — I'm so glad you're here.
I'm a millennial mom of two, a lifelong Atlanta Braves fan (yes, I will bring this up unprompted), and someone who has spent most of her adult life a little too obsessed with fashion, makeup, and whatever the internet is doing that week. I built Vela & Rho because I got tired of choosing between a bag that looked good and a bag that actually worked for my life — and because somewhere along the way, I decided I wanted to build something that outlasts a trend cycle. Something closer to a legacy than a launch.
Where it actually started
Motherhood has a way of making you brutally honest about what you'll tolerate. I needed a bag that could hold a laptop, snacks, somebody else's shoes, and my actual life — and I needed it to still feel like me when I looked down at it. Most totes made me pick a lane: pretty or practical, never both. I didn't think that should be the deal. So I started building the bag I actually wanted, and then I couldn't stop.
My mom is my best friend
I should tell you about my mom, because she's a big part of why this exists. She's my best friend — genuinely, not the thing people say — and she's also the person I've spent my whole life quietly trying to become. The way she carries herself, shows up for people, and makes hard things look graceful without ever making a big deal of it. If Vela & Rho ends up being something I get to hand down the way she's handed things down to me — a sense of style, a work ethic, the belief that details matter — that's the whole goal, honestly. Not just a brand. A legacy, built one considered thing at a time.
Why "made to go places"
I love to travel — always have. There's a specific kind of joy in being halfway somewhere, bag on your shoulder, headed toward something good. That feeling is where the name comes from. Vela means sail — movement, direction, momentum. Rho is the quieter, more personal half. Together, they're the whole idea: something that moves with you, and something that's unmistakably yours.
But "going places" was never just about airports for me. It's About Us page energy in the truest sense — it's about becoming, building, showing up as more of yourself over time. Whether that's a literal trip or just Tuesday, I wanted a brand that felt like it was made for the whole of that: the movement, the growth, the becoming.
What I hope you find here
A little bit of my mom's grace. A little bit of my own stubborn insistence that beautiful and useful shouldn't be a trade-off. A lot of care in the details — because I notice them, and I built this company assuming you would too.
Thank you for being part of the beginning of this. I mean that more than a founder's letter usually lets on.
